Wrap the male threads of the valve or riser with PTFE tape, start it by hand into the female adapter and tighten one to two turns past hand-tight with a strap wrench; over-tightening a plastic thread can split it. Then prime the pipe end and the adapter socket, apply solvent cement, push the pipe in with a quarter turn and hold until it sets. Use a pair of adapters on either side of a valve so the valve can be unscrewed for service without cutting pipe. The same fitting lets you screw a threaded hose bib, backflow preventer or drip filter onto a glued line.
