Description

Keep your flock laying strong all season with Blue Seal 16% Layer Chicken Feed, a complete ration built for hens in full production. Every bite carries the protein, calcium, vitamins, and trace minerals a working hen needs to hold her condition, build sturdy shells, and keep filling the nest box. Choose the crumble for smaller birds and mixed flocks, or the pellet to cut down on billing out and feeder waste. Both come in the same fifty pound bag, so you can switch textures without changing what your birds are eating.

Key Features

  • 16% Protein: Supports steady egg production, body condition, and feather quality in mature laying hens.
  • Added Calcium: Helps hens build strong shells and protect their own bone reserves through a long laying cycle.
  • Complete Ration: Feed it as the sole diet – no mixing, grinding, or extra supplementing required.
  • Two Textures: Crumble suits smaller birds and bantams, while the pellet stays in the feeder instead of on the ground.
  • Balanced Fortification: Vitamins and trace minerals round out the ration and support day to day flock health.
  • Consistent Quality: Milled to the same specification bag after bag, so your birds are not adjusting to a new feed every month.
  • Backyard and Barn Ready: One fifty pound bag feeds a small home flock for weeks and stacks easily in the feed room.

How to Use

Start feeding at roughly eighteen weeks of age, or as soon as the first eggs appear, and offer it free choice so hens can eat to appetite. A typical laying hen eats close to a quarter pound each day, with intake rising in cold weather and easing off in summer heat. Move birds over from a starter or grower feed gradually across seven to ten days, blending a little more layer into the old feed each day so nobody goes off feed. Keep clean, fresh water in front of the flock at all times, offer free choice grit to birds that range, and store the bag closed in a cool, dry spot up off the floor.

Make the change at about eighteen weeks of age, or sooner if you find the first egg. Blend the layer feed into their grower over seven to ten days so the birds adjust without a drop in intake.
Both are the same 16% protein ration in a different physical form. Crumble is easier for smaller hens and bantams to pick up, while the pellet resists being flicked out of the feeder and usually means less waste.
The ration already supplies calcium for shell building, so extra oyster shell is optional and best offered free choice rather than mixed in. Birds that forage or eat scratch grain should have insoluble grit available to help them grind that feed.
Roosters and retired hens can share the feeder without trouble in a mixed backyard flock. It is not the right ration for growing chicks, which need a starter or grower feed until they approach point of lay.
