Description
Coast of Maine Lobster Meal is an OMRI-listed organic plant food (4–2–0 with 8% calcium) made entirely from dehydrated, ground lobster and crab shell sourced from the Maine coast. It's an all-natural source of organic nitrogen and calcium that feeds plants during their vegetative phase to drive lush, green, leafy growth — while putting a coastal byproduct that would otherwise go to waste back to work in your garden.
The shells are naturally rich in chitin, which supports healthy soil biology, and the 8% calcium helps build strong cell walls and can help prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant.
Why Gardeners Use It
- Promotes green, leafy growth — organic nitrogen for vigorous vegetative development
- 8% calcium — strengthens cell structure and helps prevent blossom end rot
- Chitin-rich — feeds beneficial soil life and improves soil health
- OMRI Listed — approved for use in certified organic gardens
- Sustainable — repurposes lobster & crab shell that would otherwise end up in a landfill
- Great for vegetables, herbs, flowers, perennials, container gardens, trees, shrubs, and houseplants
Guaranteed Analysis
- Total Nitrogen (N) 4.0% — 2.4% water-insoluble nitrogen, 1.6% water-soluble nitrogen
- Available Phosphate (P₂O₅) 2.0%
- Calcium (Ca) 8.0%
- Derived from lobster & crab shell meal
How to Use
Apply in spring after the weather warms and water-in after each application. One pound equals about 4 cups.
- New or established garden beds: 8–10 lbs per 100 sq ft, mixed into the top 2–3" of soil
- Containers (new plantings): 1–2 tbsp per gallon of soil, mixed thoroughly (or 5 lbs per cubic yard)
- Containers (established): lightly mix 1–2 tbsp per gallon into the soil surface once a month during the growing season
- Rows of vegetables: 5 lbs per 50-foot row, twice during the growing season
- Transplanting: 1 tsp per planting hole for 6" pots or smaller; ½ to 2 cups per hole for 1-gallon pots or larger. Mix into soil and water-in.
- Trees & shrubs: 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter, raked into the soil around the drip line once yearly
- Houseplants: top-dress 2 tbsp per gallon of soil twice during the growing season
For best results, make sure the plant food is in direct contact with the soil. Do not apply near water, storm drains, or drainage ditches, and do not apply if heavy rain is expected. Apply only to your lawn/garden, and sweep any product that lands on the driveway, sidewalk, or street back onto the soil.
What Do the Numbers 4-2-0 Mean?
The three numbers on any plant food are the N–P–K ratio — the percentage by weight of the three primary plant nutrients. Lobster Meal is a 4–2–0 formula with added calcium:
- 4 — Nitrogen (N): the nutrient behind green, leafy, vegetative growth. It's the headline number here because Lobster Meal is built to green up and leaf out your plants.
- 2 — Phosphorus (P₂O₅): supports root development and energy transfer within the plant.
- 0 — Potassium (K₂O): this product contains no added potassium — its job is nitrogen-and-calcium feeding, not potassium supplementation.
- Plus 8% Calcium (Ca): not part of the N–P–K number but a key feature here — calcium builds strong cell walls and helps prevent blossom end rot.
In short, a 4–2–0 + 8% Ca analysis tells you this is a nitrogen-forward, calcium-rich organic food made for healthy green growth.
