Description

Plant a plump little hen on your porch step with the Cohasset Gifts & Gardens Lil Red Hen Planter. This 5-1/2 inch Blobhouse hen wears a mottled russet-red coat, a cream beak, a fringe of orange comb and two goggle eyes that look permanently surprised. The planting pocket sits on her back, 3 inches across, so a rosette of succulents rises right where her tail feathers would be. Small enough for a windowsill but full of character, this hen planter makes an easy gift for chicken keepers, farmhouse decorators and anyone who likes a plant with personality.

Key Features

  • Farmyard character: A round-bodied hen with a stubby dark tail, cream beak and startled painted eyes that make people smile before they notice the plant.
  • Back-mounted opening: The 3 inch pocket sits behind the head so foliage becomes her plumage; a small echeveria or hens and chicks fits the theme perfectly.
  • Drainage included: A drain hole in the base lets excess water escape, which matters for succulents and cacti that hate wet feet.
  • Textured red finish: A rough, stone-like surface painted in layered russet and brown tones that hides water spots and reads well from across a room.
  • About Cohasset Gifts & Gardens: The Blobhouse animal planters are designed by artist Gesine Kratzner and brought to garden centers by Cohasset Gifts & Gardens.

How to Use It

Match the plant to the joke. Hens and chicks (sempervivum) growing on the back of a hen is the obvious choice, and the rosettes stay compact enough not to hide her face. Use a gritty succulent mix, firm the plant in and water sparingly, letting the soil dry between drinks. Set Lil Red on a sunny sill, a potting bench or beside the back door where she greets visitors. Outdoors she is happy on a patio table or tucked into an herb bed where rain drains straight through. Group her with Wilbur the Rooster and May Belle Hen for a whole flock, and brush off dust or pollen with a soft dry cloth.
