Description

Set a hen and her chick on the porch with the Cohasset Gifts & Gardens May Belle Hen Planter with Chicks. May Belle is a rosy red hen with a red comb and beak, painted eyes, a scalloped cream ruff around her neck and cream-tipped wings folded at her sides. A bright yellow chick peeks over her back beside the planting opening, so whatever you plant grows up as her tail plumage. At 6-3/8 inches tall, this Blobhouse hen planter is one of the larger barnyard characters and holds a proper clump of succulents or a small annual.

Key Features

  • Mama-and-chick scene: The yellow chick is sculpted onto her back, so the pair stays together and gives the planter its charm.
  • Back opening: The planting pocket sits behind the chick, turning foliage into tail feathers.
  • Drain hole: A hole in the base lets water run out, so the hen can live outdoors or hold dry-loving succulents.
  • Layered rosy finish: A textured surface painted in soft reds and pinks with a scalloped cream collar and cream-edged wings.
  • About Cohasset Gifts & Gardens: The Blobhouse animal planters are designed by artist Gesine Kratzner and brought to garden centers by Cohasset Gifts & Gardens.

How to Use It

Plant May Belle with hens and chicks (sempervivum) for the obvious pun, or try a small echeveria, sedum or a compact herb like thyme. Use a gritty, fast-draining mix, firm the plant in behind the chick and water sparingly, letting the soil dry between drinks. She looks best at eye level on a porch table, a kitchen windowsill or a potting bench, and she fits easily into a country kitchen or a coop-side shelf. Outdoors, place her in an herb bed or on a patio where rain drains through. Pair her with Wilbur the Rooster and Lil Red Hen to complete the flock. Wipe her clean with a soft dry cloth.
