Description

Float a splash of green on the patio table with the Cohasset Gifts & Gardens Mel the Mallard Planter. Mel is a drake with a long, moss-green neck, a wide orange bill curled into a grin and a pair of googly eyes that stare in two directions at once. His low, bowl-shaped body shades from rust at the breast to sandy tan at the tail, with a tucked wing pressed to his side and a tail feather flicked up behind. The open back holds the plant, so a clump of moss or a low succulent becomes his feathers. At 5-1/2 inches tall, this Blobhouse duck planter offers a wide, shallow bowl that suits spreading plants better than the upright dog heads in the line.

Key Features

  • Mallard coloring: A green head and neck, an orange bill and a rust-to-tan body pick up the real bird’s markings in a cartoon way.
  • Wide bowl body: The shallow, open back gives roots more spread than a narrow cup, ideal for a small succulent cluster.
  • Drain hole: Water drains out the bottom of every Blobhouse planter, so the bowl never becomes a pond.
  • Textured finish: A speckled, sandy surface with soft color washes gives the duck planter a weathered, sculpted look.
  • About Cohasset Gifts & Gardens: The Blobhouse line of animal planters was designed by artist Gesine Kratzner and is distributed by Cohasset Gifts & Gardens, which sells it through garden centers.

How to Use It

Plant Mel with a cluster of small succulents, a mat of sedum or a cushion of moss so the greenery sits low and reads as plumage. Use a gritty, fast-draining mix, and keep a saucer under him indoors because the drain hole lets water through. Water lightly when the mix is dry; a shallow bowl dries faster than a deep pot, so check it weekly. Set the mallard planter on a patio table, a garden bench or the ledge beside a water feature, where a duck belongs. Bring him in before freezing weather. Mel pairs with Rosie the turkey for a barnyard pair.

Low, spreading plants such as a sedum mat, small succulent clusters or moss fill the shallow bowl nicely. Use a fast-draining mix.
He is fine on a patio table, bench or ledge during warm weather. Bring him indoors before freezing temperatures to avoid cracking.
