Description

Stretch a whole succulent garden along the back of the Cohasset Gifts & Gardens Rufus Doxin Dog Planter. Rufus is a long, low dachshund in rusty brown, 12-1/4 inches from nose to tail, with floppy ears, a shiny black nose and eyes that peer sideways as if he knows he looks ridiculous. A 6 inch trough runs down his back, giving you room for several sempervivum rosettes, sedums or a row of small cacti. Only 4 inches tall, this Blobhouse dog planter fits a windowsill, a mantel or a sunny patio table.

Key Features

  • Trough-style opening: The 2 inch by 6 inch pocket along his spine holds several small succulents in a row, more room than most novelty planters offer.
  • Wiener-dog proportions: A long body, stubby legs, floppy ears and a raised tail give Rufus the classic doxie silhouette from every side.
  • Drains from below: A drain hole in the base lets water pass through, so a gritty succulent mix stays sweet.
  • Weathered brown finish: A rough, painted surface in rust and chocolate tones with glossy eyes and nose that catch the light.
  • About Cohasset Gifts & Gardens: The Blobhouse animal planters are designed by artist Gesine Kratzner and brought to garden centers by Cohasset Gifts & Gardens.

How to Use It

Treat Rufus as a miniature succulent bed. Start with a layer of grit, fill with a cactus mix and plant a mix of hens and chicks, small sedums and a trailing burro's tail in a row, tallest toward the middle. Water only when the soil dries and let it run out the drain hole. Display him lengthwise on a windowsill, along the edge of a potting bench or on a patio table where people can take in the full body. Rufus also makes a fun centerpiece for a dog lover's birthday, planted and ready to go. Wipe off dirt with a soft damp cloth and bring him under cover before hard freezes.
