Push the copper-plated probe into the soil and the needle on the dial tells you where the roots stand, so you water when the plant needs it rather than on a calendar. The box lists the preferred moisture level for a range of common houseplants for quick reference. The meters come in four colors, purple, blue, green and pink; each box holds one meter in a color assorted at random, so it may differ from the photo.

How to Use It
Push the probe gently into the potting mix partway between the stem and the rim of the pot, down to root depth, and wait a moment for the needle to settle. Water if the reading is dry and the plant prefers moist soil; hold off if it reads wet. Check the box for the level your plant likes, since a snake plant and a peace lily want very different things. Wipe the probe clean and dry after each use and do not leave it sitting in the soil. It is a good first tool for a new plant parent and an easy gift with a potted plant from the greenhouse.
