Description

Pop-up sprinklers don’t get more bulletproof than this. The Hunter® PGP® Ultra is the gear-drive rotor that built Hunter’s reputation — three decades of research, patents, and field service rolled into a 4 in. pop-up body that drops into any 3/4 in. residential or light-commercial zone. Eight standard nozzles plus four low-angle nozzles ship in the cap; the rotor turns smoothly and silently through any arc from 50° to a full 360°, returns to its set arc if a kid spins it the wrong way, and won’t strip its drive gear when (not if) someone forces the turret in the wrong direction.

Why Irrigation Pros Pick the PGP Ultra

  • Automatic Arc Return — turn the turret to clear obstructions or test a head; the patented mechanism walks it back to the original arc without re-programming
  • Non-Strippable Drive — forced rotation in either direction won’t damage the gear train
  • Part- and full-circle in one model — adjust arc from 50° to 360° with the included Hunter wrench or a flat-blade screwdriver via the headed slot & set screw
  • 34 nozzle options — in-box racks cover blue standard (1.5 to 8.0 GPM) and gray low-angle (2.0 to 4.5 GPM); black short-radius, dark-green high-flow, and MPR-25/30/35 matched-precipitation nozzles sold separately
  • QuickCheck™ arc mechanism — fast arc verification and adjustment without removing the head
  • Flat-top nozzles — quick insertion, no fumbling at the cap
  • Optional pressure-regulated body — specify the PGP-04-PRB factory option to drop incoming pressures up to 100 PSI to a clean 45 PSI; saves up to 25% water on high-pressure mainlines
  • Silent gear-drive operation — no impact, no clatter, fully retracted when off
  • 5-year manufacturer warranty

Where It Shines

  • Residential and light-commercial lawn zones up to ~46 ft throw radius
  • Mixed-arc beds where the same head needs to cover both part-circle and full-circle areas without buying two SKUs
  • Retrofits replacing tired impact rotors or Toro Mini-Eight / Rain Bird 5000 series — the PGP Ultra drops onto the same 3/4 in. inlet swing joint
  • Crews already stocking PGP Ultra inventory — same body, same nozzles, same install workflow across the family

Install Notes

Inlet: 3/4 in. female NPT — threads directly onto a 3/4 in. PVC riser or onto Hunter’s HSJ-0 prefabricated 3/4 in. PVC swing joint (sold separately). Apply 2–3 wraps of PTFE tape; hand-tighten plus a quarter turn with a wrench.

Nozzle selection: Pop the cap, lift the nozzle rack, and snap the chosen nozzle into the turret. Re-test radius and arc, then trim the radius with the headed set screw (Hunter wrench or any 4 mm flat-blade screwdriver).

Arc setting: Hold the turret at the left edge of the arc, rotate clockwise to the right edge, then use the QuickCheck mechanism to verify the full sweep. If anything strips the arc later, the automatic arc return walks it back to spec.

Need a Check Valve?

The base PGP-04 has no built-in check valve. Two options:

  • User-installed: Hunter P/N 142300SP drops into the PGP-04 inlet and stops back-drainage on slopes up to 3 ft of elevation change.
  • Factory-installed: Order the PGP-04-CV variant instead — the in-body factory check valve handles up to 10 ft of elevation change and is the right choice on steep grades.

Compatibility

The PGP Ultra is family-compatible with every Hunter rotor accessory: HSJ swing joints, MP Rotator nozzles (via the MP1000-PGP retrofit cap), short-radius black nozzles for tight beds, high-flow green nozzles for large open turf, and MPR matched-precipitation nozzles for mixed-flow zones. Replacement parts (turret, nozzle tree, internals) are listed in the PGP Ultra Replacement Parts List.
