Description

The Ivy Classic 6 in. flexible tape knife is the drywall finisher's daily-driver blade for embedding joint tape, knocking down a first coat, and feathering the edges of a second. Mirror-polished high-carbon steel blade in the standard 6 in. tape-knife profile, full-tang construction, riveted into a heavy plastic handle with a brass hammer cap on the butt for setting nails as you work.

What You Get

  • 6 in. flexible high-carbon steel blade — the standard tape-knife width. Flex profile is the right springiness for bedding paper tape into joint compound and pulling a smooth first coat without dragging
  • Mirror-polished blade face — compound releases cleanly from a polished surface. Matte or pitted blades pick up mud as you work and leave streak lines in the finish
  • Full-tang construction — the blade runs the full length of the handle and is riveted through; won't loosen or rotate under repeated pull strokes
  • Brass hammer-end cap — molded into the butt of the handle for setting drywall nails as you tape. Saves switching tools when you find a popped nail mid-coat
  • Heavy plastic handle — molded ergonomic profile with hang hole; brass hardware visible on the front (rivet) and back (cap) for the “professional drywall tool” look
  • Embossed “IVY Classic” gold logo on handle

What It's For

  • Embedding paper joint tape: 6 in. is wide enough to bed tape in a single pull stroke without leaving wrinkles or bubbles. The flex profile lets you press the tape into the seam without cutting it.
  • First coat of joint compound: apply mud over the bedded tape, pull a smooth coat with the 6 in. blade, and feather the edges into the wallboard.
  • Touch-ups and patches: small holes, dings, popped-nail dimples, hairline cracks — load the blade with mud, smooth it in, scrape off the excess.
  • Setting drywall nails: the brass hammer cap on the butt is the right size for tapping nails flush as you encounter them during taping.
  • Scraping: dried mud splatter, loose paint, light caulk — the rigid edge handles general scraping when a flexible blade is what's at hand.

What It's NOT For

  • Wider mud passes — for second and third coats on butt joints and tapered seams, step up to an 8 in. or 10 in. blade. A 6 in. blade leaves visible “tracks” on a wide coat.
  • Heavy paint removal — the flexible blade will fold under the force needed to lift cured paint. Use a stiff scraper or a rigid putty knife instead.
  • Prying or chiseling — the flex profile means the blade bends rather than levering. Use a stiff blade or a pry bar.

Use Notes

Wet the blade before the first pull stroke. A dry blade picks up compound and leaves it on the wall; a damp blade releases cleanly. Keep a damp sponge or rag handy and wipe the blade every few strokes.

Don't soak the blade overnight in mud. High-carbon steel rusts. Clean the blade with water and wipe dry at the end of the day; a thin film of light oil on long-term storage prevents pitting.

Hammer-end use: the brass cap is sized for drywall nails (1-1/4 to 1-5/8 in. ring-shank, common drywall nail dimensions). Don't use it on framing nails or anything bigger than a 6d common — the brass will deform.

Clean after every use. Dried mud is much harder to remove than wet mud and damages the polish. Five seconds of rinsing right after the job saves five minutes of scraping next time you reach for the knife.
