Description

The Ivy Classic 10 in. stainless steel scratch brush is the hand brush for cleaning surfaces where carbon-steel wire would leave rust-causing deposits behind — stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and other non-ferrous metals. Crimped stainless wire bristles (.012 in. coarse) in a tapered head, riveted onto a blue plastic pistol-grip handle with a hang-hole loop.

Why Stainless Wire Specifically

Carbon-steel wire brushes (the cheaper standard) shed tiny steel particles into the surface they're cleaning. On regular steel that doesn't matter — the particles match the parent material. But on stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, or any clean-finish non-ferrous metal, embedded carbon-steel particles begin to rust within hours of contact with air or moisture, and the rust dots transfer back to the surface and trash the finish.

Stainless wire bristles don't have this problem. They don't shed rust-prone debris, so the surface stays clean after the brushing job is done.

What You Get

  • Stainless steel wire bristles — corrosion-resistant; won't deposit rust particles on stainless / aluminum / brass / copper surfaces being cleaned
  • Coarse .012 in. wire diameter — aggressive enough for rust, dirt, scale, and paint removal; not so fine that it loads up with debris quickly
  • Crimped wire profile — the bristles have a wavy set that holds shape through repeated stroking and gets into surface texture better than straight wire
  • 10 in. overall length — standard scratch-brush size; bristle field is about 4 in. wide on a tapered head
  • Blue plastic pistol-grip handle — molded-in finger relief, palm-fit profile, large hang hole at the rear for tool-board or pegboard storage
  • Embossed “IVY Classic 39303 10 in. STAINLESS Brush — Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel Wire” label on the steel ferrule

What It's For

  • Stainless steel weld cleanup: brush slag, oxidation, and heat-tint off stainless welds without carbon-steel contamination
  • Aluminum surface prep: remove oxide, dirt, and corrosion before welding, polishing, or painting aluminum without leaving rust-prone embedded particles
  • Brass and copper cleaning: polish back tarnish or scale on brass fittings, copper pipe, plumbing valves, decorative metalwork
  • Rust and paint removal on iron / steel: works as a general scratch brush too; no rust-contamination concern for steel-on-steel work
  • BBQ grill cleaning: stainless wire is the right material for stainless grill grates — carbon-steel brushes are also a food-safety issue
  • Auto-body and motorcycle restoration: chrome, aluminum trim, brass fittings, stainless exhaust

What It's NOT For

  • Power-tool use. This is a hand brush. The plastic handle isn't built to hold up to drill or grinder rotation — for those, use a cup or wheel brush with the right arbor.
  • Soft finishes. Stainless wire is still hard wire — it will scratch anodized aluminum, painted finishes, plated surfaces. Test in a hidden spot first.
  • Glass, ceramic, or stone. The wire will mar these. Use abrasive pads or specialty cleaners.

Use Notes

Brush in one direction. Random scrubbing leaves a swirl pattern; consistent linear strokes leave a brushed-grain finish that looks intentional. On stainless welds, brush in the direction of the weld bead.

Rinse the work after brushing. The brush dislodges particles — rinse with water (or solvent for oily surfaces) to flush them off the work before they re-settle.

Keep the brush clean. Tap it against a hard surface every few minutes to dislodge captured debris. A loaded brush stops cutting and starts smearing.

Don't use this brush on carbon steel after using it on stainless. Even though the stainless brush won't contaminate stainless, going stainless → carbon steel → stainless will contaminate the brush itself with rust particles. Dedicate this brush to non-ferrous / stainless work and use a separate carbon-wire brush for plain steel.
