$3.49

Description

The Jiffy Plant Tray is the industry-standard 11" × 22" (1020) black plastic seed-starting tray — the workhorse base that every other seed-starting accessory is sized to fit. Drop in peat pellets, peat pots, plastic cell packs, or plug trays, water the tray, and you have a watertight base for raising seedlings without water spilling on your windowsill, heat mat, or bench.

Why This Is The Tray Everyone Uses

  • Industry-standard 1020 size — 11" × 22" is the dimension every cell pack, peat-pellet kit, plug tray, humidity dome, and grow-light shelf is designed around. Buy this once, and every accessory fits.
  • Watertight — no drain holes; holds water for bottom-watering seedlings and prevents drips on shelves, mats, and windowsills
  • Sturdy black plastic — reusable for many seasons; the black color absorbs heat to keep root zones warm
  • Stackable & storable — nest empty trays for off-season storage
  • Pairs with the Jiffy Gro-Dome (TDOME) — the matching humidity dome that drops right on top for greenhouse-effect germination

What It Holds

  • Jiffy peat pellets (1.5" or 2") — ~50–72 pellets fit per tray
  • Jiffy peat pots / peat strips — ~32–48 pots per tray depending on size
  • Plastic cell packs — standard 4-pack, 6-pack, or 9-pack inserts; ~8–18 packs per tray
  • Plug trays — 50, 72, 128, or 200 cell plug inserts all sit flat in this tray
  • Loose potting mix — for direct-sow seed-starting if you don't want cells

How to Use

  1. Choose your insert — peat pellets, cell packs, or plug trays. Drop them into the tray.
  2. Bottom water — fill the tray with ~1/2 in. of water and let the inserts wick up. Pour off excess after 15 minutes so roots don't sit in standing water.
  3. Add a humidity dome (Jiffy Gro-Dome / TDOME) for the first 5–10 days during germination. Remove the dome as soon as seedlings emerge.
  4. Set on a heat mat for warm-season crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil) at 70–80°F.
  5. Provide light — a sunny south window or 2–4 in. below a T5 / LED grow light, 14–16 hours/day.
  6. Transition outside when night temps stay above the crop's tolerance. Harden off over 7–10 days before transplanting.
  7. Between seasons — rinse with warm water (mild bleach if you had a damping-off problem), air dry, nest for storage.

What This Is — And What It Isn’t

The tray only. Inserts (peat pellets, cell packs, plug trays), soil, seeds, dome, heat mat, and grow light are sold separately. This is the base — you build your seed-starting setup on top of it.

No drain holes. This is a solid-bottom watertight tray, ideal for bottom-watering and for catching runoff under cell packs that DO have drain holes. If you need a tray with drain holes for top-watering, look at a perforated 1020 tray instead.
