Description

Grow fresh grass right in your reptile's habitat with the Komodo Grow Your Own Tortoise Grass Reptile Food Kit. The kit holds everything you need, seed and potting soil in a ready to use container, so you only supply water and a warm spot. Tortoises and other grazers get tender live grass to browse, and you get the peace of mind that comes from growing it yourself without pesticides.

Key Features

  • Complete kit: Includes 1 oz of pure oat grass seed and 9.4 cu in of potting soil in the growing container.
  • Food right in the tank: Set the container into the habitat once the grass is up and let your tortoise graze at its own pace.
  • Naturally grown seed: Pure oat seed with a 91 percent germination rate and no added fertilizers or pesticides.
  • Enrichment as well as food: Live grass encourages natural grazing behavior instead of eating from a dish.
  • Made in the USA: Seed and kit produced domestically.

How to Use

Before removing the lid, make four to six small holes in the bottom of the container so it can drain. Remove the lid, open the seed pack, and stir the seeds into the soil, making sure they are lightly covered. Set the container on a small saucer, water until the soil is completely moist, and drain the excess. Cover loosely and keep it in a warm, dark area. When the seeds start growing, take the lid off and move it to a sunny spot, watering whenever the surface dries. In several weeks the sprouts will reach about 4 inches and are ready to feed.

Pure oat seed. The seed analysis on the package lists 99.15 percent pure seed, 0.56 percent other crop seed, 0.28 percent inert matter, and a 91 percent germination rate.
Seeds typically sprout within a week in a warm, dark spot, and the sprouts reach the roughly 4 inch feeding height in several weeks depending on light and temperature.
The kit uses plain potting soil with no added fertilizers or pesticides, and the instructions specifically warn against adding either. Incidental soil intake while grazing is normal.
Yes. Many keepers grow it on a sunny windowsill and cut greens as needed, which keeps the pot out of reach of a tortoise that would rather dig than graze.
Oat grass regrows several times if the blades are trimmed rather than pulled up by the roots and the container stays moist and well lit.
