How to Use It
Open the bale and moisten the peat before you spread it; dry sphagnum sheds water at first, so wet it down in a wheelbarrow or let a light sprinkle soak in. For a new bed, spread a layer over the surface and turn it into the top several inches of soil along with compost, then rake smooth and plant. For existing beds, work a few handfuls into each planting hole or top-dress around perennials in spring. Blend it with compost and perlite for a homemade container or seed-starting mix. Use it as one part of a complete fertilization program, since peat adds structure and moisture-holding capacity rather than nutrients. One bale covers a good-sized vegetable plot or several borders.
