Feeding Directions
Feed alongside good-quality hay or pasture, and weigh the feed rather than scooping by volume. A 1,000 lb horse at maintenance eats about 4 lbs per day with 12 lbs of hay; light work moves that to roughly 6.25 lbs, moderate work to 8.25 lbs, and heavy work to 10.5 lbs. Early gestation runs near 4.25 lbs per day and late gestation near 6.25 lbs, while a lactating mare fed separately needs closer to 13.75 lbs. Weanlings through yearlings take 7.75 to 11 lbs depending on body weight and desired growth rate, and sucklings fed individually get 1 lb per day for each month of age until weaning. Cut back 1 lb of feed for every extra 2 lbs of hay offered, never feed below 0.4 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight, and make any change gradually over several days.
