Feeding Directions
Feed with a minimum of 1 to 1.2 lb of clean hay or equivalent pasture per 100 lb of body weight. A 300 lb mini at maintenance starts near 1.3 lb per day, moves to about 2 lb in light work and 2.7 lb in moderate work; a 500 lb pony runs about 2.1 lb at maintenance, 3.3 lb in light work and 4.5 lb in moderate work. Mares take roughly 1.3 lb per day at 300 lb in early gestation and 2 lb in late gestation, with lactating mares closer to 4.4 lb when fed separately. Weaned foals, yearlings and two-year-olds follow their own charts, generally 0.6 to 5.4 lb per day depending on size and age. Keep the daily amount at 0.3 lb per 100 lb of body weight or above, and when you add hay, trim the feed by half a pound for each extra pound of hay offered. Serve meals on a schedule, splitting the day into two feedings or ideally three, using a wide trough set no higher than the animal's natural grazing height. Free-choice feeding is not appropriate. Ease into the new ration across a week to ten days.
Caution: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area protected from rodents and insects. Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed to animals, as it may cause illness, performance loss or death. Delay feeding a horse that is hot, excited, in pain, feverish or scouring, and reach out to your veterinarian if problems appear.
