Description
When your veterinarian asks you to cut starch and sugar, reach for Purina WellSolve L/S Horse Feed. This pelleted diet contains no grain and no molasses, holding dietary starch to a 7 percent maximum and sugars to 5 percent, so horses managing metabolic concerns get calories without the insulin swing. Highly digestible fibers ferment in the hindgut for slow-release energy, a blend of vegetable oils supplies essential fatty acids for shine, and a proprietary amino acid package helps maintain muscle tone on a lower-carbohydrate ration. Years of controlled study at the Purina Animal Nutrition Center and extensive field testing stand behind the formula.
Key Features
- Low starch and sugar: No molasses and no grain, with starch plus sugar guaranteed at 12 percent maximum combined.
- Highly digestible fibers: Fermentable fiber reaches the hindgut as a slow-release energy source with very little insulin response.
- Proprietary amino acid blend: Helps horses hold muscle tone while eating a carbohydrate-restricted diet.
- Vegetable oil blend: Essential fatty acids for coat shine and bloom.
- Added antioxidants: 225 IU per pound of vitamin E plus selenium help counter free radicals and support immune function.
- Biotin and magnesium included: 3.6 mg of biotin per pound and 0.5 percent magnesium round out the special-needs formula.
Feeding Directions
Feed WellSolve L/S alongside at least 1 to 1.5 lb of good clean hay or equivalent pasture per 100 lb of body weight. A 1,000 lb horse at maintenance starts at about 6 lb per day and moves to roughly 9 lb in light work; a 600 lb pony starts near 4 lb and a 1,400 lb horse near 7 lb at maintenance. Pregnant mares take about 6 lb per day through the first eight months and 8.5 lb over the last 90 days at 1,000 lb of body weight, lactating mares take about 10 lb, and breeding stallions about 9 lb. Treat these as starting points and adjust for metabolism, workload and forage quality. Do not feed more than 0.6 lb per 100 lb of body weight in one serving, split the daily total across at least two servings with three or four preferred, and never feed free choice. Horses in intense work belong on a higher-calorie diet instead, and this feed is not recommended for growing horses under two years of age. Change feeds gradually across 7 to 10 days, adjusting by no more than 1 lb per horse per day.
Caution: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area protected from rodents and insects. Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed to animals, as it may cause illness, performance loss or death. For horses sensitive to dietary carbohydrates, work with your veterinarian or an equine nutritionist on the full diet.
