Description

The 90-degree fitting that turns a buried PVC manifold or PE supply line into a side-port drip outlet without an extra trip to the truck. Rain Bird’s SBE-series barb elbow has male NPT threads on one leg (1/2″ or 3/4″, depending on the variant) and a 1/2″ insert barb on the other — thread it into a tee, coupler, or PE insert fitting, slide 1/2″ poly tubing onto the barb, and clamp it down. Glass-filled engineering plastic body takes the trench abuse that breaks cheaper imported elbows.

Why Installers Pick the SBE

  • Male NPT to 1/2″ barb in a single fitting — eliminates the male-MIPT adapter plus barb fitting stack that adds two leak points
  • 90° geometry — runs the lateral tubing up and out of the trench at right angles to the supply line
  • 1/2″ barb size matches industry-standard 1/2″ drip and lateral poly tubing (.700″ OD class)
  • Glass-filled plastic body — resilient to UV, soil chemistry, and freeze-thaw
  • Rain Bird quality control — consistent barb OD batch-to-batch (no surprise loose-fit clamps)
  • Compatible with Oetiker stainless 1-ear clamps, worm-drive clamps, or the standard Rain Bird SBE-clamp on the barb side

Pick Your Inlet Thread

  • 1/2 in. (SBE050) — 1/2″ male NPT into a 1/2″ female-threaded tee, coupler, or supply fitting. The right pick for most residential drip manifolds and 1/2″ supply laterals.
  • 3/4 in. (SBE075) — 3/4″ male NPT into a 3/4″ female-threaded fitting. Use when stepping down off a 3/4″ main into a 1/2″ drip lateral, or when the supply tee on the manifold is 3/4″.

Both versions deliver the SAME 1/2″ barb on the outlet side — only the inlet thread size differs.

Where It Shines

  • Drip irrigation manifold builds — pop the SBE into the manifold tee, run 1/2″ poly to each plant or emitter
  • Bed and shrub zone laterals — transition from a buried PVC main to a surface-laid 1/2″ drip line
  • Service-call patches — replace failed import barbs that lost their barb ridges or cracked at the thread
  • Foundation drip kits and Xerigation installs where every leak point matters

Specifications

  • Model numbers: SBE050 (1/2″ MPT) and SBE075 (3/4″ MPT)
  • Inlet thread: 1/2″ or 3/4″ Male NPT
  • Outlet: 1/2″ insert barb — fits 1/2″ nominal poly drip tubing (.700″ OD class)
  • Geometry: 90° elbow
  • Body material: Glass-filled engineering plastic
  • Recommended clamp: Oetiker 1-ear stainless or equivalent worm-drive (sized to 16–18 mm closing range for the 1/2″ barb)
  • Use: Buried or surface, residential / light commercial irrigation
  • Approximate weight: 1 lb per pack
  • Origin: Rain Bird

Install Notes

  • Wrap the male NPT threads with 2–3 layers of PTFE tape (or use approved pipe-thread sealant); hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a wrench
  • Slide the clamp over the poly tubing BEFORE pushing the tube onto the barb
  • Push the tubing fully home onto the barb — the last barb ridge should be fully covered by tubing
  • Position the clamp over the barb body and crimp / tighten
  • Pressure-test the fitting before backfilling the trench
