Description

Compact paver base, gravel pads, asphalt patches, and prepped soil with the Razor-Back Steel Tamper. The all-steel construction — head, shaft, and grip — takes the weight that drives the compaction down without flexing or breaking like wood-handled tampers do under hard use. Choose the 8″ × 8″ head for tight-corner work and small repairs, or the 10″ × 10″ head for production paver base prep where every extra square inch saves you swings.

Vendor: Razor-Back · Available Sizes: 8″ × 8″ (model 30004) or 10″ × 10″ (model 30005)

Size Options

  • 8″ × 8″ (model 30004): ~11 lb total weight — for tight-corner work, paver-base trenches, around utility risers, asphalt patch repair, narrow walkways
  • 10″ × 10″ (model 30005): ~16 lb total weight — for full paver base compaction, large patio prep, sub-grade work, production hardscape installs

Why a Steel Tamper?

  • All-steel construction: head, shaft, and grip are all steel — nothing to crack, splinter, or work loose like wooden-handle tampers
  • Heavy-duty for daily use: built to withstand industrial, residential, and commercial construction abuse
  • Heavy head transfers your effort downward: compaction is a function of weight times distance, and steel weight does the work that lighter tampers can’t
  • 10″ handle grip: two-hand control with the standard grip length pros expect — not a stubby retail-grade handle
  • Razor-Back heritage: the contractor-grade brand for striking and digging tools — same line as Razor-Back shovels and rakes that hardscape crews already trust

Best For

  • Paver base prep: compacting bedding sand and crushed-stone base before laying pavers, slabs, or natural stone
  • Asphalt patch repair: compacting hot mix into pothole and trench patches
  • Trench backfill: compacting backfill in lifts around utility runs, irrigation lines, and post holes
  • Tight-corner finish work: areas a plate compactor can’t reach — corners, around posts, alongside structures
  • Garden & landscape work: firming planting beds, leveling stepping-stone foundations, compacting decomposed granite walkways

Specifications

  • Construction: All-steel head, shaft, and handle grip
  • Handle Length: ~10″ (handle grip section)
  • Use: Asphalt, gravel, stone, dirt, paver base, sub-grade compaction
  • Application: Industrial, residential, commercial
  • Vendor: Razor-Back (Ames Companies)

Care & Use

  • Strike the work surface flat — angled strikes ride off the surface and waste the swing
  • Work in lifts — compact 2–4″ of base material at a time, not a single thick pass
  • Wipe clean and dry between jobs — steel will surface-rust quickly if stored wet
  • Lightly oil the head before long-term storage
  • Wear safety glasses — flying gravel and dust are real hazards on tamping work
