Description

Carry a young horse from growth straight into work with Sentinel Grow & Excel Horse Feed, a 100% extruded Kent formula that combines a precise balance of protein, high fat and high fiber with low-starch, low-sugar ingredients. The same bag suits weanlings coming up through their two-year-old year, horses in heavy work, breeding stallions and mares in late gestation, which keeps one feed on the barn aisle instead of three.

Key Features

  • gutWise® Technology: A proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics, marine-sourced calcium and NutriVantage® for horses helps maintain total digestive health.
  • Low NSC: Dietary starch is capped at 13.0% and sugar at 4.0%, keeping growth calories steady rather than spiking.
  • 10% Crude Fat: High fat plus fermentable fiber delivers cool energy for growth, lactation and heavy exercise without a grain-heavy ration.
  • Essential Amino Acids: Guaranteed lysine, methionine and threonine make quality protein available for continuous growth and maintenance of bone, muscle, hoof and hair.
  • Built-In Fiber: Soybean hulls, beet pulp and alfalfa meal support healthy hindgut fermentation and provide safe, natural calories.
  • Advanced Antioxidant Package: Vitamins and organic trace minerals offer immune support for normal health and metabolism.
  • Easy to Chew: Light, airy extruded nuggets break down readily and slow consumption, which helps young horses that bolt their feed.

How to Use

Feed by weight per 100 lb of body weight daily. Yearlings from 12 to 18 months take 0.65 to 0.95 lb, long yearlings 0.60 to 0.85 lb and two-year-olds 0.55 to 0.70 lb. Mature horses take 0.40 to 0.60 lb in light exercise up to 0.65 to 1.20 lb in very heavy exercise; mares in the last three months of pregnancy take 0.40 to 0.70 lb and lactating mares 0.75 to 1.10 lb. Adjust for condition and offer good-quality hay or pasture, free-choice salt and plenty of fresh water. Store in a cool, dry place. Contains supplemental copper – do not feed to sheep.

Kent's chart starts at the yearling stage, 12 to 18 months, at 0.65 to 0.95 lb per 100 lb of body weight daily. Suckling foals and weanlings are better matched to Sentinel Safe Start, which carries higher protein for early growth. Move up to Grow and Excel once the youngster reaches the yearling range and step the rate down as it matures.
Yes, that is the point of the formula. Mares in the last three months of pregnancy take 0.40 to 0.70 lb per 100 lb daily, lactating mares 0.75 to 1.10 lb and breeding stallions 0.40 to 0.60 lb. One bag covers the whole breeding barn, with the rate adjusted per horse.
It is 100% extruded, so the bag holds uniform light nuggets instead of a molasses-coated textured mix. That form breaks down easily and slows down horses that eat too fast. About 0.85 lb fills one quart, so weigh the feed the first time you set a ration and mark your scoop.
Not when the feed is offered at the recommended rate, since it already carries balanced minerals, organic trace minerals, vitamins and guaranteed amino acids. If you feed below the minimum rate, a ration balancer such as Sentinel Care Topline 30 fills the gap. Store the bag cool and dry, and keep it away from sheep because of the added copper.
