Description

Start a foal right and keep the mare producing with Sentinel Safe Start Horse Feed, a 100% extruded Kent formula for growing foals and lactating mares. Highly fortified, high in protein and fat, it supplies the precise nutrition that supports healthy skeletal and muscle growth in youngsters and strong milk production and composition in mares. Show horses needing muscle mass, topline and coat condition do well on it too.

Key Features

  • 16% Crude Protein: High-quality protein with guaranteed lysine, methionine and threonine supports continuous growth of bone, muscle, hoof and hair.
  • gutWise™ Technology: A proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics, marine-sourced calcium and NutriVantage® for horses helps maintain total digestive health.
  • 8.5% Crude Fat: Cool calories from fat and fermentable fiber fuel growth and lactation without relying on a heavy grain load.
  • Advanced Antioxidant Package: Vitamins and organic trace minerals offer immune support for normal health and metabolism in young, developing horses.
  • Built-In Fiber: Soybean hulls, beet pulp and alfalfa meal support healthy hindgut fermentation and provide safe, natural calories.
  • Easy to Chew: Light, airy extruded nuggets break down readily and slow consumption, which suits foals learning to eat from the creep feeder.
  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Plus biotin and balanced minerals maintain skin, hair coat, hoof condition and strong joints and bones.

How to Use

Feed by weight per 100 lb of body weight daily. Sucklings take 0.70 to 1.10 lb, weanlings 0.90 to 1.40 lb, yearlings 0.60 to 0.95 lb, long yearlings 0.55 to 0.75 lb and two-year-olds 0.45 to 0.70 lb. Mares in the last month of pregnancy take 0.40 to 0.65 lb and mares in their first three months of lactation 0.65 to 1.10 lb. Divide the total into two or more feedings and adjust for condition. Offer good-quality hay or pasture, free-choice salt and plenty of fresh water. Store in a cool, dry place. Contains supplemental copper – do not feed to sheep.

Sucklings can begin in a creep feeder at 0.70 to 1.10 lb per 100 lb of body weight daily, which is roughly 1.5 to 2.5 lb for a growing foal. Weanlings step up to 0.90 to 1.40 lb per 100 lb, the highest rate on the chart. Reduce the rate steadily as the youngster ages so growth stays even rather than rapid.
Yes, and that is how most operations use it. Mares in their first three months of lactation take 0.65 to 1.10 lb per 100 lb daily and mares in the last month of pregnancy 0.40 to 0.65 lb. Feed each at its own rate rather than letting the pair share one bucket.
It is 100% extruded, so the bag holds uniform light nuggets instead of a textured mix with loose grain and molasses. Foals chew the airy nuggets easily and eat more slowly than they would loose grain. About 0.85 lb fills one quart, so weigh the ration instead of trusting a scoop.
Not when Safe Start is fed at the recommended rate, since it already carries balanced calcium and phosphorus, organic trace minerals, vitamins and guaranteed amino acids for sound skeletal development. Adding unbalanced minerals to a growing horse's diet can do more harm than good. Store the bag cool and dry, and keep it away from sheep because of the added copper.
