Spears® 1406-010 Standard 90° Elbow, 1 in., Insert × Insert, PVC, Domestic

Size: 1"
Price:
$1.99

Description

The Spears® 1406-010 is the 1 in. PVC 90° elbow that turns a flexible polyethylene irrigation line through a right angle without thread, cement, or fittings stack. Two barbed insert ends, dark-grey UV-stable PVC, push-on-and-clamp on both sides. Spears USA marking, domestic-manufactured to ASTM D2466.

Why You'd Reach for the 1406-010

  • Two barbed insert ends (insert × insert) — the simplest 90° corner fitting for 1 in. flexible polyethylene irrigation tubing; both ends accept 1 in. poly with no thread, no cement, no rubber gasket
  • Retention ribs on each barb — the molded ridge profile grips the poly inner wall; cinch with a stainless screw clamp or pinch clamp on each end for a long-term joint that holds at full irrigation pressure
  • Turns the run without breaking it — route a 1 in. poly line around an obstacle, into a different trench direction, or down to a buried valve box without splicing
  • Dark-grey UV-stable PVC — molded for outdoor / surface-exposed irrigation lines; doesn't require burial like white SCH 40 PVC pipe fittings
  • NSF-certified domestic manufacture — carries the “NSF-pw” mark for potable-water service, made in the U.S.A.
  • Manufactured per ASTM D2466 — the controlling spec for PVC pressure pipe fittings
  • Spears USA, domestic manufacture — computer-stress-analyzed mold design with reinforced material at the bend where flex-poly torque concentrates

Where It Fits in the System

  • Trench-direction changes (the classic use): a 1 in. poly mainline that has to turn 90° around a property corner, structural obstacle, or to enter a valve box. Cut the poly, insert a 1406-010, clamp each side.
  • Down-leg drops to valve boxes: when the mainline runs horizontal but the valve box is below grade, the 1406-010 puts in the vertical drop without a fitting stack.
  • Around-the-house routing: external 1 in. poly supplies to hose bibs, secondary spigots, or out-buildings routinely need corners; this is the part that makes them.
  • Pool and water-feature plumbing: 90° corners in 1 in. poly return loops, filtration loops, or skimmer-to-pump tubing.
  • Workshop / hobby plumbing: anywhere a 1 in. poly run needs a 90° bend and the joint is non-threaded.

  • Suitable for: cold water only on PVC (for hot water above 73°F, choose a different fitting material)

Installation Notes

Both ends are barbed inserts — same procedure on each: Cut the poly square. Warm the poly tubing in hot water for 30 seconds if it's a cold-day install (makes the insert push-fit easier). Push the barb fully into the poly so the pipe is seated past the last retention rib. Secure with a stainless steel hose clamp or pinch clamp positioned over the barbed section — tighten until the clamp screw is snug but not over-deformed.

Plan rotation before clamping: the elbow can be rotated to any angle around either insert centerline before the clamp on that side is tightened. Dry-fit both ends, mark the rotation that matches the trench geometry, then clamp.

Both ends need clamps — an un-clamped barb joint can creep loose under temperature cycling and irrigation surge pressure.

No cement, no cure time — unlike SCH 40 PVC fittings, this elbow can be pressurized as soon as both clamps are tightened. Useful for emergency repairs or rerouting work where the system needs to go back into service quickly.
