Size: 3/4"
Price:
$0.59

Description

The Spears® 401 is the standard PVC tee — three solvent-weld socket ends in a T configuration, ready to branch a 3/4 in. or 1 in. PVC lateral wherever a zone needs to split. Molded white PVC, Spears USA, domestic-manufactured to schedule 40 / standard dimensions, NSF-certified for potable water.

Why You Need a 401 Tee

  • Three solvent-weld socket ends — all three openings take primed-and-cemented PVC pipe; no thread tape, no compression nut, no leak path at any of the three joints
  • Straight-through × branch geometry — two collinear sockets (run) plus one 90° branch socket; lets you tee off a lateral without breaking the main run
  • Molded PVC (Type I, cell class 12454) — conforms to ASTM D1784 spec; chemically resistant to soil acids, irrigation fertilizers, chlorine, and typical municipal water
  • Schedule 40 / standard dimensions — matches any 3/4 in. or 1 in. schedule 40 PVC pipe and fitting in the system
  • Manufactured per ASTM D2466 — the controlling spec for PVC pressure pipe fittings; carries the NSF-pw mark for potable water service
  • Spears USA, domestic manufacture — computer-stress-analyzed mold design with reinforced material at the branch saddle (the highest-stress point on any tee)

Where It Fits in the System

  • Irrigation zone branching: tee off a mainline to feed a sprinkler valve manifold; tee off a lateral to add a head; split a drip-zone run into two parallel runs
  • Pool, pond, and water-feature plumbing: branch a pump discharge to feed a return jet plus a skimmer return on the same line
  • House plumbing (cold-water only on PVC schedule 40): tee off a cold supply for an outdoor hose bib, drip irrigation port, or expansion tank
  • Pump suction manifolds: tee two parallel pump suction lines together for redundant pumping, or split a single pump output to feed two zones
  • Workshop / hobby plumbing: compressed-air branch (use schedule 80 instead for safety), hydroponic nutrient loop, aquaponics build, RO water distribution

Size Differences

  • 3/4 in. (Model 401-007, SKU 50813) — 3/4 in. nominal sockets all three sides, 3-1/8 in. overall length end-to-end on the run. The size for typical residential sprinkler laterals and drip zone branches.
  • 1 in. (Model 401-010, SKU 50789) — 1 in. nominal sockets all three sides, larger overall footprint. The size for sprinkler mainlines, pump discharge manifolds, and most pond / pool plumbing.

Installation Notes

Dry-fit first: A three-way joint deserves a planning moment. Loosely assemble the run pipe through the tee’s straight sockets and the branch pipe into the 90° socket. Verify alignment, mark the run-pipe rotation with a pencil at the branch socket, and pull apart.

Prime and cement each socket: Spears P-70 (or equivalent) PVC primer on both the pipe end and the inside of each socket. Apply medium-bodied PVC solvent cement to both surfaces. Push the pipe fully into the socket and rotate 1/4 turn to spread the cement. Hold for 30 seconds per joint.

Branch alignment: The 90° branch socket has a small molded boss inside that the pipe shoulder seats against. As you push the branch pipe in, rotate it to your marked alignment before the cement skins over (you have about 15 seconds of working time with medium-bodied cement on 3/4 in. and 1 in. fittings).

Cure: 1 hour before low-pressure water test; 24 hours before full operating pressure. Cement-cured PVC joints are as strong as the parent pipe wall — the failure point is always the cement bond, never the fitting itself, when cement is properly applied.

The branch saddle is the highest-stress point: if a zone needs to handle water-hammer or pump-start pressure spikes, add a thrust block (poured concrete around the tee) or use a more rigid fitting like a backflow-rated tee. The 401’s rated for standard residential / light-commercial use.
