Description
The Spears® 447-007 is the 3/4 in. PVC cap that closes off the end of a schedule 40 PVC pipe permanently. The single end is a slip-cement socket; prime, cement, push, hold — the joint is a chemically-welded plastic seal that's stronger than the pipe itself. Molded white PVC, domed crown, Spears USA marking, domestic-manufactured to ASTM D2466.
Why You'd Reach for the 447-007
- Solvent-weld socket end — cements directly onto 3/4 in. schedule 40 PVC pipe; no thread tape, no rubber gasket, no leak path
- Domed crown — distributes water pressure across the full hemispherical end rather than a flat face; the strongest geometry for a sealed pressure cap
- Permanent termination, not a maintenance closure — once cemented the cap is part of the pipe; removal means cutting back into the line. Use a threaded plug (Spears 449 series with a 435 socket-FNPT adapter) if the closure needs to be openable
- Molded PVC (Type I, cell class 12454) — conforms to ASTM D1784; chemically resistant to soil acids, irrigation fertilizers, chlorine, and typical municipal water
- Schedule 40 / standard dimensions — matches any 3/4 in. schedule 40 PVC pipe and fitting in the system
- Manufactured per ASTM D2466 — the controlling spec for PVC pressure pipe fittings; carries the NSF-pw mark for potable water service
- Spears USA, domestic manufacture — computer-stress-analyzed mold with reinforced material at the cement shoulder where end-of-line pressure concentration is highest
Where It Fits in the System
- Manifold end-stops: the last station on a sprinkler manifold gets a 447-007 cemented onto the end of the lateral; the cap seals the line and lets the system pressurize.
- Pressure-test bulkheads: cap the end of a PVC run before backfilling the trench, pressure-test, then cut the cap off and continue if the test passes — the cap fitting is cheap and disposable for this workflow.
- Future-proofing terminations: when a zone is roughed-in but heads aren't yet installed, a 447-007 caps each riser stub so the line holds pressure until the heads go in.
- Drip irrigation submain end-caps: the buried PVC submain feeding a drip distribution gets capped where the drip emitter line takes over.
- Cut-and-cap repairs: when a sprinkler head or zone is being permanently abandoned, cap the riser at the lateral so the rest of the zone keeps working.

Installation Notes
Socket end onto PVC pipe: Square-cut and de-burr the pipe end. Dry-fit into the cap socket to verify the pipe seats fully against the internal seating ring. Apply Spears P-70 (or equivalent) PVC primer to both the pipe end and the inside of the cap socket — the primer chemically softens the PVC for cementing; skipping it is the #1 reason an end cap weeps under pressure. Apply medium-bodied PVC solvent cement to both surfaces. Push the cap fully onto the pipe and rotate 1/4 turn to spread the cement and eliminate dry spots. Hold for 30 seconds.
If you may need to remove this later, DON'T use a 447 cap. The solvent-weld bond is intentionally permanent; removal requires cutting the pipe back behind the cap and re-cementing a new fitting in place. For openable closures, use a Spears 435-007 female adapter (already cemented onto the pipe) plus a threaded plug that can be unscrewed at will.
Cure: 1 hour before low-pressure water test; 24 hours before full operating pressure. Cold-weather installs (below 60°F) need longer cure — double the times below 40°F.
