How to Use

Carry the bat in your inside hand with the shaft resting against your thigh and the popper pointing back. Ask with your leg first, and if your horse does not respond, follow with a light tap just behind your leg, then reward the forward step. Keep taps short and quiet and use the bat as a reminder, not a punishment. For showmanship and ring work with pigs, goats or calves, use the popper to guide the animal's shoulder or hip into position. Wipe the shaft and popper with a damp cloth after muddy days and store it hanging so the shaft stays straight.

Both. Weaver lists it as a riding bat, and the 24 in. length with a wide popper is also the classic style used by youth exhibitors to guide show pigs, goats and calves in the ring.
The 24 in. bat gives six more inches of reach, which helps taller riders on big horses and anyone working an animal from the ground. It has a rubber grip instead of the 18 in. bat's PVC handle and wrist loop.
Most hunter, jumper and schooling classes allow a bat or crop up to 30 in., so 24 in. is within the limit. Livestock showmanship rules vary by show, so check the rule book for your class.
