Description

Back up your leg, seat and voice with the Weaver Riding Bat with Wrist Loop, 18" Shaft. This classic schooling bat from Weaver Equine pairs an 18-inch shaft with a wide, flat popper that makes a sound more than a sting, so it reinforces a cue without startling a sensitive horse. The comfortable PVC handle gives a sure grip in bare hands or gloves, and the wrist loop keeps the bat with you when you need both hands on the reins. Short enough to carry without catching on the saddle, it is the everyday riding bat for flatwork, lessons, trail rides and the first jumps of the season. Choose a Black shaft or a Red shaft, both with a black handle and popper.

Key Features of This Riding Bat

  • 18-inch shaft: A handy schooling length that reaches behind the leg without getting in the way of the reins.
  • Wrist loop: Slip it over your wrist so the bat stays put when you drop it to adjust reins or open a gate.
  • Comfortable PVC handle: Textured grip that feels good in the hand and will not slip when sweaty.
  • Wide popper: A flat, flexible end that reinforces a cue with sound rather than sting.
  • Training aid: Serves as an extension of leg, seat and voice cues during schooling and lessons.
  • Two colors: Black for a traditional look or Red to match a colorful set of tack.

How to Use

Carry the bat in your inside hand with the shaft resting against your thigh and the loop over your wrist. Ask with your leg first, and if the horse does not respond, follow with a light tap just behind your leg, then praise the forward step. Use it as a reminder, not a punishment, and keep taps short and quiet. Wipe the shaft and popper with a damp cloth after muddy rides and store it hanging so the shaft stays straight. The 18-inch measurement runs from the end of the handle to the tip of the shaft and does not include the popper; see the measuring guide in the gallery.

Choose Your Color

Both bats are the same 18-inch shaft with the same PVC handle, wrist loop and popper. Pick Black for a classic bat that goes with any tack, or Red for a shaft that is easy to spot in the tack room and matches red saddle pads and polo wraps.

From the end of the handle to the tip of the shaft where the popper starts. The popper itself is not included in the measurement, so the overall bat is a little longer than 18 in.
A bat is a short crop with a wide, flat popper. The popper makes a slapping sound that reinforces a cue without much sting, which makes a bat a good choice for schooling and for sensitive horses.
Most hunter, jumper and schooling classes allow a bat or crop up to 30 in., so an 18 in. bat is well within the limit. Check your association's rule book for the class you are entering.
Carry it in the hand on the side where the horse tends to fall in or lose impulsion, usually the inside hand on a circle. Switch hands when you change direction.
Wipe the shaft and popper with a damp cloth after muddy or sweaty rides and let it dry. Store it hanging or lying flat so the shaft does not take a set.
We stock the Black shaft and the Red shaft. Both have a black PVC handle, wrist loop and popper.
