How to Use

Carry the whip in your inside hand with the shaft resting against your thigh and the popper pointing back and down. Ask with your leg first; if your horse does not respond, follow with a light tap just behind your leg, then reward the forward step. Keep taps short and quiet and use the whip as a reminder, not a punishment. Switch hands when you change direction. Wipe the shaft and popper with a damp cloth after muddy rides and store it hanging so the shaft stays straight. The 30-inch measurement runs from the end of the handle to the tip of the shaft and does not include the popper; see the measuring guide in the gallery.

From the end of the handle to the tip of the shaft where the popper starts. The 6 in. popper is not included, so the whip is about 36 in. overall.
A bat is short with a wide, flat popper. A riding whip like this one is longer and thinner with a small popper, so it reaches further back and gives a more precise cue.
Most hunter, jumper and equitation classes allow a whip or bat up to 30 in. measured without the popper, so this whip is at the limit. Dressage allows longer whips in many tests. Check the rule book for your class.
Carry it in the hand on the side where the horse tends to fall in or lose impulsion, usually the inside hand on a circle, and switch hands when you change direction.
